PUBLIC Gallery is pleased to present Everybody’s heard about the bird, an exhibition of new works by Belgian artist Pieter Jennes. This offsite exhibition is staged in Antwerp in collaboration with Gallery Sofie Van de Velde.

Bringing together the theatrical, satirical and mystifying, Jennes’ paintings conjure a place that is both exotic and everyday. Mining a vast range of historical and contemporary sources, painterly traditions and techniques; Jennes weaves webs of real and imagined stories that fold in and out of each other, filtering the modern world through a lens of elaborate allegory, optical illusion and art history.

This exhibition presents eleven paintings produced during the current period of unprecedented social restrictions, during which our gatherings have been forced for the most part outdoors. This new body of work explores this moment in time through images of illegal forest parties, birds and exotic animals from Antwerp Zoo. The featured works include paintings of epic scale and detail, as well as more intimate snapshots of nature and its inhabitants.
