Carmen Schabracq

Biography

Carmen Schabracq (1988) Amsterdam, is a multidisciplinary artist. She makes paintings, sculptural installations, ceramics, tapestries, costumes and performance. She studied painting at the Academie di Belle Arti Roma, obtained her BA in Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (2012) and an MA in theatre costume design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (2015). The mask is a recurring object and theme in her work, with which she explores the multiplicity of layers of identity. She is often inspired by
folklore and art history from different cultures and times. Her work is characterised by the pronounced use of colour, tactility, craftsmanship and a feminist aspect. She did artist in residencies in Mexico City, the Vincent van Gogh House in Zundert, in Bulgaria, at Kunsthuis SYB, at BijlmAIR and at Lotto Zero in Italy. In 2024 she designed the costumes and masks for the opera production The Gospel according to the other
Mary at the Volksoper in Vienna. Her work is included in various renowned art collections such as those of the Dutch Ministry of Internal affairs, the Free University of Amsterdam (VU) and the Akzo Nobel Art Foundation. Carmen collaborates with Galerie Fleur en Wouter and her work has been shown in exhibitions in Stedelijk Museum Breda, CBK Zuidoost, Museum Tot Zover, Nest ruimte Den Haag, No limits! Art Castle, the Vincent Van Gogh Huis and the Amsterdam Museum.
