In DRIFT. Duin tot Doggersbank, 22 contemporary artists bring together past, present and future around one urgent question: how does humanity relate to nature? The exhibition is inspired by the ideas and legacy of Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten. In 1881, with their famous Panorama of Scheveningen, they already drew attention to the preservation of the Seinpost dune. This exhibition invites us to look at the North Sea and the coastal landscape anew, and from a different perspective.
Folkert de Jong’s sculptures take people out of their comfort zone, confronting them with both the beauty and the danger of the sea. They present a hybrid monster, but one that also needs our protection from human pollution. Because of the moral dimension embedded in them, the sculptures also have something of the quality of fairy tales. Folkert describes Dogger en Sirene as a creature fleeing from pollution, seated on another creature that has already mutated further. But everyone is free to come up with their own story.
