In September 2026, Be-Part will once again bring a pavilion into the public space of Waregem. For four weeks, the pavilion will serve as an open laboratory for contemporary art, with sustainability, experimentation and collaboration with local partners at its core.
For this edition, Be-Part has invited artist Ives Maes. Maes has developed a strong body of work around temporary architecture and pavilion structures, and has also been researching this subject for many years at KASK School of Arts Ghent. His practice operates at the intersection of art, architecture and social reflection, making him an ideal match for Be-Part’s ambitions.
The design for the pavilion in Waregem is based on the fascinating principle of the camera obscura: a darkened space in which the outside world becomes visible as an inverted, life-size projection through a small opening. This optical phenomenon is incorporated into the pavilion’s circular structure, creating a poetic space for observation, contemplation and wonder. The various circles form an open and dynamic configuration in which a range of activities can take place.
For the architectural development, Maes is collaborating with designer Samyra Moumouh.
The pavilion engages with different definitions of the concept of ‘refuge’: holiday resort, sanctuary, bunker, ecological refuge and observatory. Crucially, the pavilion is not merely an object, but an active social space that comes to life through collaboration with local associations and partners. It is conceived as a versatile meeting place, suitable for performances, (film) screenings, workshops and other public activities.
