Wassily Kandinsky / Jules Schmalzigaug: at Project Space, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde
Past exhibition
Overview
Galerie Sofie Van de Velde, in collaboration with Henri Steenbeke, invites you to immerse yourself in a dialogue of colour and sound with an exhibition featuring the works of Wassily Kandinsky and Jules Schmalzigaug. Kandinsky’s celebrated '12 Kleine Welten', a rare portfolio from his Bauhaus years, reveals his pioneering exploration of abstract forms as a symphony of colour. Each print, from lithographs to woodcuts and etchings, unfolds like a visual composition, where shapes, lines, and hues echo the rhythm and harmony of music itself. Alongside Kandinsky, the vibrant futurist works of Antwerp-born Jules Schmalzigaug resonate with chromatic dynamism. His bold, swirling compositions capture the spirit of a city, a melody, or a fleeting moment, translating sound into colour with extraordinary sensitivity. Together, these artists conjure immersive worlds where abstraction and figuration, colour and sound, imagination and structure, meet in perfect harmony. Visitors will discover visual symphonies, abstract cityscapes, and the extraordinary interplay of tone and hue that defined early 20th-century avant-garde art.
