Walter Van Beirendonck b. 1957

Walter Van Beirendonck is one of Belgium’s most influential and distinctive fashion designers. His work extends beyond fashion into jewellery, art, performance, costume and graphic design, consistently challenging conventional ideas about clothing, identity and the body.

Born in Brecht in 1957, Van Beirendonck graduated from the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1980. Together with Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee, he became part of the group later known internationally as the Antwerp Six, whose work placed Antwerp at the centre of contemporary fashion.

Since 1983, Van Beirendonck has presented his own collections, each built around a distinct title, theme or visual world. His designs are characterised by vivid colours, unexpected combinations, bold graphics and an imaginative approach to the human body. Drawing inspiration from contemporary art, literature, nature and popular culture, he uses fashion as a way to explore identity, sexuality, social conventions and the relationship between the individual and society.

Throughout his career, Van Beirendonck has deliberately blurred the boundaries between fashion and other creative disciplines. His work includes jewellery, costumes for theatre, ballet, film and music, as well as collaborations and projects in graphic design and visual art. In 1997, he designed the costumes for U2’s PopMart tour, while his work for the stage has included collaborations with the Paris Opera and other international cultural institutions.

From 1993 to 1999, he developed the influential W.&L.T. (Wild and Lethal Trash) collections, through which he further established his distinctive visual language. His designs from this period combined provocative imagery, humour, strong colours and graphic symbols with a critical view of contemporary culture. His interest in masks, identity and transformation has remained a recurring element throughout his practice.

Van Beirendonck has also played an important role as an educator and curator. He taught at the Antwerp Fashion Academy from 1983 and became head of the fashion department in 2006, a position he held until 2022. Through both his teaching and his own practice, he has had a lasting influence on generations of designers emerging from Antwerp.

His work can be found in major international collections, including those of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Van Beirendonck continues to work across fashion, art and design, maintaining an approach that is playful, provocative and uncompromisingly individual.
