Walter Van Beirendonck b. 1957
Walter Van Beirendonck is one of Belgium’s most influential and distinctive fashion designers. Born in Brecht in 1957, he graduated from the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1980. Together with Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee, he became part of the internationally renowned Antwerp Six, putting Antwerp firmly on the global fashion map.
Since launching his own collections in 1983, Van Beirendonck has developed a bold and instantly recognisable visual language, characterised by vivid colours, graphic imagery, unexpected combinations and a playful approach to the body. His work often explores identity, sexuality, social conventions and the relationship between the individual and society.
His practice extends well beyond fashion into jewellery, costume, performance, graphic design and visual art. From 1993 to 1999, his W.&L.T. (Wild and Lethal Trash) collections further established his provocative and imaginative approach. He has also created costumes for theatre, ballet, film and music, including the costumes for U2’s PopMart tour in 1997.
Alongside his own practice, Van Beirendonck has had a lasting influence as an educator, teaching at the Antwerp Fashion Academy from 1983 and serving as head of the fashion department from 2006 to 2022. His work is held in major international collections, and he continues to work across fashion, art and design with a characteristically playful, provocative and uncompromising vision.
