Mattias De Leeuw BE, b. 1989

Overview

Mattias De Leeuw (1989) is a Belgian painter based in Antwerp.

His work explores intimacy, human presence, and emotion through direct, instinctive brushstrokes. Working with acrylic, oil sticks, and oil paint on paper, De Leeuw paints figures in domestic spaces, creating scenes that hover between observation and imagination.

He has received multiple awards for his artistic work, including the Gulden Palet in the Netherlands, and was selected for The Original Art Exhibition in New York. His paintings have been shown at Philippe La Baune Gallery (New York).

Trained in Illustration at St Lucas Antwerp, he began his career in publishing, editorial work, and stage design before shifting his focus toward painting as a more personal and expressive medium.

De Leeuw’s practice bridges drawing, painting, and observation and form a continuous search for connection, vulnerability, and the small intimate moments that make us human.
