Bruce Nauman 1941--
Bruce Nauman (born 1941) is an American artist whose diverse practice has had a profound influence on contemporary art. Working across sculpture, photography, video, performance, installation and neon, Nauman has continuously questioned the boundaries of artistic disciplines and the role of the artist within society.
After studying mathematics before turning to art, Nauman developed an experimental approach that placed process, investigation and perception at the centre of his work. Rather than focusing on a single medium or style, he used the body, language, repetition and everyday actions as tools to examine the nature of art itself. His performances, sculptures and installations often challenge the viewer through unexpected combinations of physical presence, sound, words and movement.
From the 1960s onwards, Nauman became one of the key figures in the development of conceptual and post-minimal art. His use of language and unconventional materials expanded the possibilities of sculpture and influenced generations of artists working with installation, performance and new media.
Today, Bruce Nauman is regarded as one of the most important artists of the post-war period. His continuous exploration of perception, communication and artistic practice has established a lasting influence on contemporary art.
